ABSTRACT 

A study of two co-infections between Tiypanosoma brucei and  baker, infections were studied in male albino mice. The mice were divided into six groups of five mice per group. The groups were infected with I-leligiiiosoimnies bakeri 3 days after infection with Trypanosoina brucel or with T Tunica 3 days after infection with fJ. bakeri or with either infection singly or infected with T.briicei and H.bakeri on the same day while the uniniected group served as the control. Infections were monitored using faecal egg count (FEC), body weight, packed ccii volume (PCV) and parasitaemia. Statistical analysis showed a significant difference (P<.001) between faecal egg count of Ihe singly infected group (2172) and the double infected groups (4029). PCV of the uninfectcd group (40.8%) showed a significant difference (P<.00 1) when compared to groups having both parasites (1 7.3 %). The uninfccted group showed a significant difference (P<.O01) in weight gain when compared to weight of mice on combined infection groups. There was a significant difference (P<.00 1) in T.brucei jarasitaemia of the mice in the groups infected with both parasites when compared with the singly infected group. It was noted that the increased egg excretion observed in animals infected with both parasites might significantly increase the risk of nematode infections. Tiypanosome infection however, proved to be a bane in gastro intestinal nernatode control where both occur as mixed infections since it enhances the establishment and pathogenic effects of the nernatode. These interactions should therefore, be considered whenever attempts arc made to control the two diseases.
