ABSTRACT

The study was on the services and performances of deposit money banks in Abia state; using a

case study of five selected banks which are First Bank of Nigeria plc, Oceanic International Bank

Plc, Intercontinental Bank Plc, Access Bank Plc and Diamond Bank Plc. Secondary data only

were used in this study. The secondary source includes bulletin, publications, textbooks and

journals were used in generating the data used for this study. The study shows that First Bank of

Nigeria plc had the highest number of branches which encourages its outreach to its customers,

while Access Bank plc had the lowest number of branches and does not encourage outreaches

due to its limits in expansion. The result shows that First Bank had the highest profitability rate

in 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008 whose values were 10,323, 11,096, 12184, 16,653 and

18,335 respectively. While Access Bank had the latest performance across the years: 557, 637,

502, 737 and 6,083 in millions. More so, the result shows that equity, liability, asses, deposits

and outstanding loan were significant variables affecting the performances of the selected banks.

The result of the t-test shows that there was a positive and significant relationship between the

assets and liability of the banks. In conclusion, the result also shows that there is a positive and

significant relationship between the performances and the outstanding loan of the banks. A

monitoring team should be elected by the CBN to enable the banks manage their liability and

assets. Policies that will increase banks assets and reduce banks liabilities should be enforced.

Such as having a stipulated amount which the banks should give out as loan annually and should

not be exceeded.
