Abstract
This
study investigated the anti-plasmodium properties of G. Latifolium leave on P.
berghei infected albino mice using ethanol and water extract. Peter’s four (4)
days suppressive test was earned out on twenty four (24) mice sub-grouped into
six (6) treatment groups with four (4) mice per group, two of the group
received two different doses of the ethanol extract (400mg/kg/day, and
500mg/kg/day) while another two groups received two (2) different doses of
water extract (400mg/kg/day and 500mg/kg/day) for four days, the other groups
being the control and standard group received 5ml/kg/day and 5mg/kg/day of
distilled water and camoquin, respectively. The group treated distilled water
had no reduction in degree of parasitaemia, while the group treated with
camoquin responded to the treatments. The group treated with the ethanol
extract had a better response to treatment when compared with that of water
extract. The percentage chemo suppression observed was as high as 95.83%, 100%,
91.67% and 95.83 for 400mg/kg/day and 500mg/kg/day of ethanol extract and
400mg/kg/day 500mg of water extract respectively. The result shows that G.
Latifolium is a good antimalaria agent. The incidence of plasmodiasis may be
controlled by exogenous plants metabolites resulting in suppression of
parasitaemia. The antioxidant properties ofsome ofthe natural products could be
considered as an alternative for cure and prevention of parasitaemia. The
result obtained from the study showed strong anti-plasmodium effect of ethanol
extract that is comparable to calmoquin
