A Comparison Of Some Methods Of Leaf Area Determination On Some Crops In Umudike In South Eastern Nigeria
ABSTRACT
The project located at Michael Okpara University of Agriculture Umudike teaching and research farm, Umudike aimed at establishing the conversion factors which when applied will minimize the variation or errors observed in the various method used in determining leaf area, because no two methods give the same leaf area. Five arable crops namely Abelmoschus esculentus L. Moench var. Lady's fmger, Telfairia occidentalis, Sesamum indicum var. indicum Zea mays L., Citrullus vulgaris L. Schrad var. sugar baby were measured fifty leaves each using both the non destructive methods of length x breadth and graph as well as the destructive method by Cork-boring. For determining the leaf area of water melon using LxB method, the area has to be multiplied by 2.26 to obtain the average leaf area of one leaf of what graph method would have given or if the graph method was used, it should be divided by the same factor to obtain what LxB would have given, for Sesame, the factor is 2.69 for maize, the factor is 1.04, for fluted pumpkin (Telfairia occidentalis) the factor is 1.63 and for Okra, the factor is 1.40 respectively.
