ABSTRACT

Security software called intrusion detection systems may be used in computers to detect unusual and suspicious activities and in some cases stop a variety of harmful actions by authorized or unauthorized persons. Integrity checking tools have been designed to aid system administrators to monitor their file systems for unauthorized modifications. They have proven to be popular tools, because they are portable, configurable, scalable, flexible, manageable, automatable and secure. Ultimately the goal of integrity checking tools is to detect and notify system administrators of changed added or deleted files in some meaningful and useful manner. This work will be based on designing a data integrity checking system which can serve as some sort of intrusion detection tool. In this project, the inherent strengths of TIMS in a network, especially in detecting and correcting unauthorized alterations in important organization files, is outlined. A little is said about hash-function which will be employed in the generation of database of TIMS. This project focuses on developing server-based data integrity software that would run on a network. The ultimate goal of this project is to create Tripwire data integrity management system.
