The Utilization Of Government Publications In Special Libraries: A Case Study Of Ministry Of Justice, Owerri.

ABSTRACT

 The study examined the utilization of Government publications in ac ministry library in Imo State. The descriptive survey research design was adopted in this study with a sample size of 200 respondents, comprising of staff of the ministry of Justice, Imo state. The study revealed that government publications are available at the ministry library. Also, the types of government publications available at the ministry's library are gazettes, laws of the federal republic of Nigeria, all Nigeria law reports, parliamentary debates, annual reports/press release, law of eastern Nigeria, Lagos state laws, all Nigeria laws reports, Imo state law reports and supreme courts judgments, are available at the ministry of justice library, Imo State. The study also revealed that the ministry of justice makes use of government publications to a high extent. However, the factors militating against the use of government publications in the Ministry are obsolesce, lack of proper organization, non-provision of computers and internet facilities, inadequate copies of the relevant government publications, lack of proficient reprographic services like photocopy. printing etc., and inadequate funding of the library. It is, therefore, recommended that the government should address the problems militating against the proficient use of government publication at the ministry through adequate funding and equipment of the library, engaging the services of professional and adequate librarians at the ministry's library, provision of adequate reading materials, proper arrangement/shelving of library materials and provision of adequate relevant publications.
