The Role Of School Library IN The Development Of Children’s Reading Habit. A Case Study Of Federal Government Girls College, Owerri

ABSTRACT

This study aims at investigating the role of school library in development of children reading habit using Federal Government Girls College Owerri as a Case Study. The objectives of this study includes to ascertain if the children make use of the library, to determine how often they make use of the school library and to examine the materials students read when they visit the library. To achieve this objectives the researcher adopted descriptive research survey design. The population of the study was 724 students with the use of Yaro Yemeni, the sample size was computed to be 258. Data was sourced through both primary and secondary sources. The primary data was through questionnaire, frequency distribution table and percentage was used to analyze the data. The researcher recommends that Secondary Educational Board (SEMB) should see to it that every secondary school establish to have a well equipped library. In order to attract both student and teachers to the library, the teacher librarian should be qualified and exhibit some level of courtesy towards the library users. Students should be encouraged to always visit the library to read, as students who read in the library perform better than those who do not make use of the library.
