ABSTRACT

One very difficult task for mathematicians has been to give a comprehensive but precise definition ofthe subject mathematics. Sometime, seven Fields medalists in mathematics attempted to define mathematics. One of the striking definitions they gave is that “mathematics is what mathematicians think it is . That is, the definition of mathematics depends upon who the practitioners ofthe discipline are and at least upon the number of different schools of thought existing in the subject if not on every mathematician. Different schools ofthought, particularly in philosophy have put forth radically different definitions. All are controversial. Illustrious scholars have debated this matter until they were blue in the face, and yet no consensus has been reached about whether mathematics is a naturalscience, a branch ofthe humanities or an art.
