ABSTRACT

This study examined the Abuse of Library materials in Academic Libraries in Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike. The objective of the study were to determine the various form of document mostly abused, to identfy the causes of abuse, to ascertain the categories of users that abuse library materials and finally to suggest ways of curbing the menace the statement of the problem is to examine and evaluate the dfferent security issues anti-social and unethical behaviors of students which include theft, mutilation, defacing of library materials in academic libraries. The population of the study was (20000) the sample size selected for the study was (392) using simple random techniques data was collected through a designed questionnaire that determined the tested variables. The research employed for the study was descriptive survey design. The four research question was statistical analyzed using mean and standard deviation. The abuse of materials has posed tremendous challenge to the library profession. The incident of theft non-return of materials and mutilation of library stock are on the increased side, theft and mutilation of books and non-books is a common phenomenon in Nigerian University libraries collections and preservation.
