ABSTRACT

The species composition and abundance of the invertebrate fauna community of Anya-Mgbe and Orii miri streams, located between Lat 5°S and 29°N and Long. 7°W and 39°E were analysed in two periods July (26-29lh) 2006 and November (17-2011’) 2006. Marcoinvertebrates were secured with the use of a kick bucket by kicking the littoral and bottom sediments while the zooplankton were secured using a plankton net of 55p mesh. A large number of invertebrate fauna were secured. The invertebrate community was composed of 95/229 individuals of macroinvertebrates for both study periods and a total no of 66 & 71 were recorded for zooplankton for both periods respectively. The overall fauna composition and abundance were not significantly different at the study stations. Rotifera were the most abundant zooplankton groups recorded for both periods; for the macroinverbetrates, Hirudinea (leeches), were the most abundant during the first sampling period while Odonata (dragonfly) were the most abundant during the second period, resulting to increased faunal productivity in these study streams.
