ABSTRACT

Erosion is defined as the actual removal of the surface soil which contains vital plant nutrients by wind, water and other associated agents. Erosion has been a pressing issue in Nigeria today. Abia state, a state in the south east is among the state that is badly affected by erosion. This project work identifies Oroni in Abiriba, Ohafia L.G.A., of Abia state as an area that is badly affect by gully erosion, the work also identifies the cause of the gully ersion at Oroni as poor channel construction at the site which makes the discharge from upstream to flow in another direction thereby creating a parallel channel instead of the installed channels. A new design of soil erosion control system for Oroni, Abiriba, Ohafia L.G.A., was carried out, also various field and laboratory tests were carried out which include particle size analysis, atterberg limits, specific gravity, moisture content, etc. A trapezoidal channel was designed to carry 2.5m3/swith bottom width of O.8m, depth of O.4m and bed slope of 3.16% respectively to control the erosion by conveying the runoff to the Oroni river which serves as the outlet discharge point, when this measures are properly implemented, the erosion occurring at the study site should have been effectively controlled.
