ABSTRACT

Medicinal plants are plants that have a recognized medical use. They range from those used in the production of mainstream pharmaceutical products to plants used in herbal medicine preparations values. The aim ofthis study is to determine the effect of ethanol extract of Bridelia scleroneura leaf on Fe2+/Fe3+ ratio, solubility and osmotic fragility of sickle erythrocytes. Bridelia scleroneura leaves were air-dried into coarse powder. The results showed that the ethanol extract of Bridelia scleroneura leaf significantly (P < 0.05) inhibited sickling at all concentrations with the highest percentage inhibition of 76.67%, reversed sickled erythrocytes at all concentrations with the highest percentage reversal of 63.3% and significantly (P < 0.05) inhibited polymerization at all concentrations used in comparison to the parallel control. Result indicated that there was a significant increase (p<0.05) in membrane-stability of Sickle RBC and) and osmotic fragility (at 50% and 25% concentrations) and a decrease in solubility (P > 0.05) when compared with parallel control. The results indicate the anti-sickling potential of ethanol extract ofBridelia scleroneura leaf
