Abstract

Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike The study discussed the role of psychology in the preparation of secondary school students’ athlete for competitive sports. Psychology constructs such as self-concept, anxiety and stress in relation to competitive sports were discussed. The functions of sports were discussed. The functions of these psychological concepts as regards to the student athletes were further discussed. How these constructs will be effectively applied to modify the students’ behaviour during the preparation for competitive sports was highlighted and their significance to the students was x-rayed. Recommendations included how students could manage stress, build a positive self-concept and control their anxiety level before and during preparation for competitive sports. It was finally recommended that teacher trainers and others should not always focus on the physical aspects of the students but on their psychological well being as well.
