ABSTRACT

The effect of intra-row spacing (20,40 and 60cm) on two vegetable cowpea (Akidiani and 1T86F-2014-1) varieties were investigated in a field trial at Umudike during the wet season of 2002. Akidiani at intrarow spacing of 40 and 60cm was significantly (P<0.05) taller than 1T86F-2014 —1 at all spacing. It had more branches and took longer time to attain 50% flowering. There were intra — row spacing effects on branching and attainment of 50% flowering Akidiani also had more seeds per pod but lower seed weight than 1T86F-2014-1, which produced higher fresh pod yield. Interaction of crop variety and intra — row spacing showed that 1T86F-2014-1 produced higher fresh pod.
