Relationship Between Socioeconomic Status Of Parents And Biology Students' Academic Achievement In Awgu LGA Enugu State Nigeria.

ABSTRACT

The study investigated the relationship between the socio economic status of parents and biology students' academic achievements in selected secondary schools in Awgu local government area of Enugu state Nigeria. The population for this study comprised all the SS1 & 2 students in Enugu state. The sample consists of 200 students from 4 randomly selected schools. A questionnaire tagged socioeconomic questionnaire and standardized test scores of Biology students served as instrument for the study. Test re test method was used to determine the reliability and a reliability coefficient of 0.84 was obtained. Data collections were analysed using frequency, percentage mean and regression. The result revealed that there is a significant relationship of family size, parents' income level, and parent's educational qualification on biology students' academic achievements. Among others, it was recommended that the government at all level should establish and equip more adult education centres for the training of illiterate parents, and teachers should ensure cooperative atmosphere whereby students from various socioeconomic statuses could have a conducive learning environment.
