ABSTRACT
The study investigated the relationship between principals’ supervisory practices and teachers’ job effectiveness in secondary schools in Umuahia South local Government area of Abia state, Nigeria. This study adopted correlational survey research design. Five research questions and five null hypotheses guided the study. The entire population of 143 respondents were used for the study. Hence, there was no sampling since the number was manageable. Two instruments were developed by the researcher for data collection. They included a item questionnaire tiled: Principal supervisory Practices Questionnaire (PSPQ) and a item questionnaire titled Teachers’ Job Effectiveness Questionnaire (TJEQ). The instruments were validated by three experts, while the reliability was established using Cronbach alpha Statistic which yielded the overall indices of 0.73 and 0.73 for PSPQ and TJEQ respectively, indicating that the instruments were reliable for the study. With the help of two research assistants, the researcher administered 143 copies of the instruments from which 107 copies were retrieved and used for data analysis. Pearson’s Product Moment Correlation Coefficient (r) (PPMCC) was used to answer the research questions while linear regression was used to test the hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. Results showed among others that Principals’ class visitation and Principals’ instructional programmes supervisory practices respectively significantly to a very high extent correlate with teachers’ job effectiveness, while Principals’ academic progress records and Principals’ supervision of professional records significantly to a high extent and moderate extent respectively correlate with teachers’ job effectiveness. However, Principals’ supervisory practices significantly to a high extent correlate with teachers’ job effectiveness in Umuahia south LGA of Abia state.
