ABSTRACT

This study was conducted in Ariaria International market Aba in Abia State to determine the prevalence of hypertension, diabetes mellitus and nutritional status of adult traders. Data was drawn from 200 respondents, 153 males and 47 females Biochemical test was carried out on the respondents to determine their blood pressure and blood glucose levels and also structured questionnaire was administered and information was collected on demographic, socio-economic data, food consumption pattern, food preference and anthropometric attributes. A total of 46.0% of the respondents had low blood glucose, 1.5% had high blood glucose and 53.5% had normal blood glucose and 35.3% of the respondents have optimal blood pressure, 05% body mass index, 43.4% are over weight and 32.8% are obese. The study has provided information on the prevalence of hypertension, diabetes mellius and nutritional status of adult traders in Aba and have also provided a frame work that should be used in designing appropriate intervention programmes to reduce blood glucose level, high blood pressure and obesity in Aba, Abia stateĀ
