Place And Role Of The Academic Library In Tertiary Institution In Nigeria:- Samuel, Nnenna C.

ABSTRACT

The establishment of academic libraries in institutions of higher learning across the globe is geared towards supporting and enhancing teaching, learning and research.Edom (2012) stated that academic ltbranes are primarily established to support and enhance the tripartite functions and the full realization of the educational goals of the parent institutions. The strength of any institution is accessed by the strength of its library. By implication therefore, the success of any institution depends on the facilities, resources (human and material) etc. of its library. Academic libraries are integral parts of institutions of higher learning, be it the Universities, Polytechnic, Colleges, and Research Institutes. To fulfil their mandate of supporting the educational objectives of their parent bodies, the library had to develop and maintain standard books, journals, and audio- visual collections and services. If laws providing for the establishment of tertiary institutions must make provision for the establishment of the library simultaneously, it means that academic libraries are as old as institutions they serve.
