ABSTRACT

The physiochemical properties (pH, conductivity, alkanlity, hydrogen carbonate, total dissolved solids, dissolved oxygen, total hardness) of twelve (12) samples of water from four sources (boreholes, wells, streams and sachet) water in Abayi Isingwa of Abia state were determined. The results ranged from 5.4-6.7 for pH,0.03-3.9 for conductivity, 132-197.8 for total hardness, 6.72-104 for alkanility, 165-208 for hydrogen carbonate, 122-48 1 for total dissolved solids and 5.2-6.22 for dissolved oxygen. Water samples had physical parameters that were not within the permissible limit. The pH of the well water and sachet water were below the value for WHO standard. Microorganisms identified in some of the water samples were (Escherichia coli), (Kiebsiella pneumonia), (Faecal streptococci), and (Enterobacter aero genes). The samples most contaminated were well water. Following the world Health Organization guideline for portable water, borehole and clean water were acceptable for drinking while well water and sachet water were not.
