ABSTRACT

A cycloconverter is a converter that obtains a lower frequency alternating voltage wave from a fixed high frequency alternating voltage form and this is done through some switching arrangements SCRS (Silicon Control Rectifiers) or Thyristors. Cycloconverters are mainly used in VVVF (Variable Voltage, Variable Frequency) AC drives which are used for running the AC motors of cement and steel industry. Review of relevant literature was carried out to ascertain the level of research that have been done in this area. Here, the work focused on making a design of single phase to single cycloconverter and a three phase to three phase cycloconverter with the help of Matlab using Simulink Computer Software and also study the behaviour of the two types of cycloconverters. From the results obtained, it could be shown that variation of the firing angle ‘α’ leads the changes in the load voltages and currents irrespective of the load type.
