ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to determine the nutritional status of the middle aged to elderly patients with diabetes in Federal Medical Centre (F.M.C) umuahia. The study involves both hiosp1alized and those that attend counselling or follow up in the dietetic department of the hospital. Structured Questionnaire validated was used to elicit information on socio-economic status, dietary profile and clinical records. Weighed food intake was used to know their nutrient intake and skin fold calliper was used to know their body The study revealed that 34% of the age brackets (46-50 years) were the group mostly affected. There was strong relationship (P< 0.01) between educational level, estimated income and also knowledge on how to take care of diabetes. About 87.5% of male respondents were overweight (13M1 > 25.0) and 12.5% of female respondents were overweight. The nutrient intake of hospitalized patients are monitored more than non hospitalized intake. The mean crude protein was 8.4872 ± 10. 56856 for hospitalized and 47.5250 ± 88.11526 for non hospitalized.
