ABSTRACT

This study was carried out on the numerical methods for solving systems of linear equations. Systems of linear equations were discussed• and methods of solution, both analytic and numerical were reviewed. The occurrence and methods of solving linear systems were researched on. It was found that the application of finite difference methods to ordinary and partial differential equations lead to tridiagonal and block tridiagonal system of linear equations. It was also shown that least square t polynomial approximation of continuous functions lead to a system of algebraic equations. Each method was discussed in detail and an example was used for illustration. Computer programs were written in visual Basic and implemented on a computer to carry out the lengthy calculations. The study of the numerical solution of systems of linear equations is important since it seems to be the most feasible method for solving such system of equations.
