ABSTRACT

This work investigates the management of electronic resources in Imo state library board.

Accordingly, five research objectives were drawn for the study which include; to identify the

available electronic information resources in the Imo state library board, Owerri, determine the

extent ofuse ofelectronic information resources in the Imo state library board, Owerri, identify

the management processes adopted in the library, ascertain the challengesfaced in managing

electronic information resources in the library and alsoprofferstrategies to effective management

of electronic information resources in the library. A descriptive survey research design was

adoptedfor the study with a population of86 librarians ofthe library. The questionnaire was

drafted an used as an instrument to collect data and were also validated by a research expert in

the department oflibrary and information science in Michael Okpara University ofAgriculture,

Umudike. Theywerepresented in tables andanalyzed using thefrequency distribution table, mean

score, percentages andstandarddeviation. Findinds revealed the available electronic information

resources available in the library to include E-books, E-magazine, E-journals, Audiovisual etc,.

Findinds also shows the management processes adopted by the library to include electronic

resources administration, cataloguing ofthe resources, maintenance ofthe resources and so on.

It also identified some ofthe challengesfaced in management ofelectronic resources to include

poorfunding, attitude ofthe parent organization, epilepticpowersupply, lack oftechnicalsupport

staffetc, and initiatedstrategies to countertheseproblems to include improvefundingfor effective

management ofelectronic resources in the library, implementation ofmanagement policy by the

library, training andretraining ofstaffetc. Following thesefindings, recommendations were made

to the effect that Imo state library should initiate trainingprogramsforlibrary staffin the library,

adequate funding should be providedfor the library to facilitate its services, Imo state library

board should design library websites to provide links to their electronic/online resources and

web/internet based services.
