Isolation And Characterization Of Bioactive Compounds In Stachytarpheta Jamaicensis (VAHL)

ABSTRACT
Chemical investigation of the bioactive constituents in Stachytarpheta jamaicensis resulted in the isolation of four new steroidal glucosides from the leaves and three f NMR, IR and Mass Spectra were used to propose the structures of the bioactive compounds isolated from Stachytarpheta jamaicensis. Ethanol (98%) extract of Stachytarpheta jamaicensis exhibited significant in-vitro antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcusfecalis, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Candida albicans. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) was attained at 6.25-12.5mg/ml for the leaves and 12.5-25mg/ml for the stem barks. The phytochemical evaluation revealed the availability of bioactive compounds comprising alkaloids (3.048-8.265mg/100g), tannins (0.080-0.254mg/100g), phenols (0.014-0.029mg/100g), saponins (0.564-0.744mg/l 00g), flavonoids (0.780- 9.820mg/100g) and oxalates (0.667-1.277mg/ 100g). The minerals content revealed magnesium (1.094-I.277mg/100g), calcium (3.707-4.509mg/100g), potassium (1.2- 1.3mg/100g), sodium (0.325-0.55mg/100g), phosphorous (0.689-0.708mg/100g), manganese (5.80-7.98mg/I00g), zinc (11.13-15. lOmg/lOOg), copper (4.88- 4.98mg/100g), lead (1.60-2.46mg/100g) and iron (51.30-53.08mg/100g). The vitamins content was ascorbic acid (92.40-57.20mg/100g), 0-carotenoid (312.50- 474.54mg/100g), riboflavin (2.63-4.13mg/l00g), thiamin (0.38-0.75mg/100g) and niacin (0.84-1.4 lmg/100g). The presence of steroids and triterpenoids in Stachytarphetajamaicensis shows that the herb is of potential phytotherapeutic value in the treatment of diseases and hormone replacement therapies.
