ABSTRACT

Shifting cultivation is a very important strategy for weed management as it leads to weed reduction. Knowledge of the relationship between weed density, weed seedbank and soil properties is important for the success of small-scale farming in Nigeria. This study, conducted in 2012, assessed above-ground weed density, weed seedbank population and emergence pattern in relation to the soil properties of fields in Mgbidichi-Ohaji, Imo State and Amaoba-lme, Ikwuano, Abia State, both located in Southeastern Nigeria. Soil samples were collected before the fields were burnt and above-ground weed flora was assessed before the fields were weeded. The seedbank size was significantly (
