Influence Of Performance Management On Employees Commitment In Banking Sector: A Study Of Selected Banks In Abia State Nigeria

ABSTRACT
The study focused on the influence of performance management on employees' commitment in First Bank, Union Bank and Ecobank Nigeria Plc. The specific objectives were to: ascertain the impact of career planning on employees' commitment, find out the impact of training and development on employees' commitment, and evaluate the impact of performance appraisal on employees' performance in First Bank, Union Bank and Ecobank Nigeria Plc. The study adopted survey research design. Primary and secondary sources of data were used. The population of the study consists of all the employees of First Bank, Union l3ank and Ecobank Nigeria Plc in Abia State. Multiple Regression analysis were used to analyse the objectives and test the hypotheses posited. Major findings revealed that: At 1% and 5% level (Sig < .01; < .05) of significance respectively there is a positive and significant relationship between career planning variables and employees' commitment. At 1% level (Sig < .01) of significance there is a positive and significant relationship between training and development components and employees' commitment in First Bank, Union Bank and Ecobank Nigeria Plc. The study concluded that: performance management have a significant and positive impact on employees' commitment in banks. The following recommendations were outline: career planning programmes should be regularly review and aligned to employees' career needs and desired career progression, and should incorporate processes that assess employees' career potentials, harness it and aligned it to organizational goals and objectives. Banks management should ensure that the performance appraisal processes are explicit, transparent, reflecting the actual performance of the each individual, and objective feedback on performance should be maintained. The performance appraisal system should makes correction possible and provides a strategic avenue for employees' training. development and rewarding employees in harmony with organisations policy and strategies.
