ABSTRACT

Hisbiscus S'abdariffà is known for delicacy and also for medicinal properties. The present work aim to study the phytochemical, proximate and antioxidant screening of' J-Iisbisczi.s ,solvluii/fu for various medicinally important compound and their quantification. i'he result showed that calcium. niacin, riboflavin, iron, phosphorous, and protein are present in calyces of hisbisbus sabdari/Ja. Protein content was highest while the contents of calcium, niacin, riboflavin, iron, phosphorous were lowest. The major compounds are gossypetin, hibiscetin, quercetin and sabdarefin (Flavonoids) while delphinidin 3-sambubioside and cyaniding 3-sambudioside are the major anthocyanins. The antioxidant activity of the investigated extract has a scavenging ability of DPPH (517nm). The IC5O value of Hsbiscus andari/fa extract was I OOug/ml while that of ascorbic acid used the reference control was 6.7mg. This indicated that the compounds consisting many calyces of Hisbiscus Sabdarif/i.such as anthocanins. fiavonoids, phenolic acid contribute to the antioxidant activity. Findinds provide evidence that the calyces extract of ilishiscus Sc'bdcu'i//a is a potential source of natural antioxidant. This justify its use in folkloric medicines.
