ABSTRACT

 The study, therefore, sought to investigate the effect ofpoverty reduction on economic growth in Nigeria. To capture the objectives ofthe study, the study estimated a multiple regression model with gross domestic product (GDP) as the dependent variable and government expenditure rural development schemes, government expenditure on education, government expenditure on agricultural credit schemes as well as the lagged values of GDP as independent variables. Annual time series data rangingfrom 1981- 2017 ofthe selected variables were employed in the analysis. The study established that in the shortrun government expenditure on agricultural credit schemes education has a positive impact on economic growth in Nigeria. The positive relationship is also statistically significant indicating that government expenditure on agriculture education has a major determinant ofeconomic growth in Nigeria.
