ABSTRA CT
The study focused on the Impact of corporate social responsibility on employment
creation in Nigeria (A study of three selected manufacturing companies in Enugu). The
specific objectives sought achieve in this study include, to detennine the relationship
between Corporate Social Responsibility and employment creation in the three selected
Manufacturing companies in Enugu State, to ascertain the extent to which Corporate
Social Responsibility achieve employment creation in the three selected Manufacturing
companies in Enugu State, to detennine the relationship between host community
empowerment and organizational performance of the three selected Manufacturing
companies in Enugu State and to determine the extent of host community empowennent
in the three selected Manufacturing companies in Enugu State. A survey research
design was adopted for the study. The study had a population size of 3000, out of which
a sample size of 353 was realized using Taro Yamanes's formula at 5% error tolerance
and 95% level of confidence. Instrument used for data collection was primarily
questionnaire and interview. Out of 353 copies of the questionnaire that were
distributed, 312 copies were returned while 41 were not returned. The hypotheses were
tested using Chi-Square and Z-test statistical tools. The findings indicate that there is a
significant relationship between Corporate Social Responsibility and employment
creation in the three selected Manufacturing companies in Enugu State (Xc = 247.519
>X,=11.143, p =0.00 <a = 0.05). Also that Corporate Social Responsibility to a
significant extent achieves employment creation in the three selected Manufacturing
companies in Enugu State (Xe = 298.054 > X®, = 9.348), there is significant
relationship between host community empowerment and organizational performance of
three selected Manufacturing companies in Enugu State (Z, = 6.487 > Z, = 1.96, p=
0.00 <a = 0.05) and finally, that the extent of host community empowennent in the
three selected Manufacturing companies in Enugu State is high (Z, =5.657 > Z,= 1.96,
p = 0.00 <a = 0.05). The study recommended that manufacturing companies should
concentrate on improving their performance by continuously indulging on corporate
social responsibility because the customer and host community expectations and the
environmental competing variables increase with the passage of time. Again, they
should develop effective mechanism of CSR adaptive enough to enshrine in their
companies policies and programme memorandum of understanding on host community
employment and stick to the rule in employing more qualified indigene in their rank and
file of employees.
