Gastrointestinal parasites of pigs of Emahs farms in Isiala -Ngwa North L. G.A Abia State. Nigeria

ABSTRACT

A study was conducted to determine the prevalence of gastrointestinal helminth of pigs at (Urata) in Isialangwa —North Local Government Area, Abia ' >tate du ing 2009 .A total number of 100 feacal samples were col ected from 100 different matured pigs and examined microscopically to identify the presence of gastrointestinal parasites. Out of 100 animals examined,79 (79%; were mfected while 21 (21%) were uninfected. The helminth or parasite groups encountered were nematodes 64 (81.0%) and trematodes 16 ,(20.3%). The parasites identifies were: Castrodiscus aggypliacus Oesophagostrum  highest overall prevalence rate of 58.2%, followed by Ascaris suurr with 46.8% prevalence. Mixed infections were encountered in 51 (64.6%) of the 100 pigs. examined.
