Factors That Affect Egg Plant Production In Isiala Ngwa North Local Government Area, Abia State

ABSTRACT

The study examined the factors affecting the production of eggplant in Isiala Ngwa North Local Government Area of Abia State. The specific objectives were to determine the constraints in production and resource LISC efficiency among the farmers. Simple random sampling method was adopted in selecting sixty (60) respondents. Data for the study were collected through well structured questionnaire and oral interviews. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics such as percentages, frequency distribution table and regression analysis. The result show that the major cost elements in the enterprise were fertilizer (99.36%), labour (99.97%), capital (99.40%), and seed (99.80%). The profit was N 53806.99 was obtained depending on the number of respondents and return per naira was 0.200 that is for every N 1.00 invested in Eggplant production, a profit of 20 kobo was made. The factors of farm size, fertilizer and seed were underutilized while labour and capital were over utilized. The policy implication is that current levels of labour and capital should be reduced. Also policies and programmes that will enable farmers have more access to land, fertilizer and seed should be put in place.
