ABSTRACT

The research is a descriptive survey research design on extent of disaster preparedness of library materials in university libraries A case ofMichael Okpara University ofAgriculture Umudike. The major purpose was to investigate the extent ofdisaster preparedness oflibrary materials in university libraries A case ofMichael Okpara University ofAgriculture Umudike. It was guided byfive purposes andfive research questions. The study has a population of 70 which was totally enumerated for the study: A single data collection instrument was questionnaire. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistical method including frequency counts, simple percentage and mean score. Data analysis revealed the types of disaster MOUAU library is vulnerable to. The data indicates that the respondents agreed that thunderstorm, mutilation, fire, insect attack, rodent invasion, water and wind storm are types ofdisaster MOUAU library is vulnerable to. It also indicates that enactment ofpolicy against disaster, provision of basic facilities to avert disaster, supporting training and retraining of staffin areas ofdisaster preparedness, provision ofadequate fundfor disaster preparedness and organizing a disaster fighting scheme are carried out efficiently and effectively. The finding also reveals the causes of disaster in MOUAU library. They include fire outbreak, lightning, relative humidity, temperature and water.
