ABSTRACT

A field experiment was conducted during the 2004 cropping season in the ultisol of the Eastern farm of MOUAIJ; to determine the effect of reduced rates of glyphosate. propanil and glyphosate f- propanil mixture in the control of Pan jcurn maximum and l)igilaria horizonlalis. The experiment was a split-plot in randomized complete block design with treatments replicated three times with three main and three sub- treatments, including a non-treated or control plot in each sub-plot. Statistical analysis showed that the treatments significantly (P < 0.05) reduced weed densities, total dry matter, and visual ratings as compared with non-treated plots. Highest weed control were obtained from glyphosate (89%) and glyphsatc - propanhl mixture (79%). Propanil did not compare favourably in most of the parameters considered, with 4 glyphosate and glyphosale + propanil mixtures as main treatments. On application. progressive reduction of recommended rates of the active ingredients were employed. The three reduced rates (levels) represented sub treatments. From these, all scores however significantly differed clearly from the control, indicating that treatment at all levels had good weed control and so could he used in place of high recommended rates in event of need.
