ABSTRACT

The antimicrobial activity of five commonly used toothpaste was investigated against staphylococcu aureus, candida albicans, Lactobacillus acidophilus isolates from the oral cavity of volunteers from ikwuano L.G.A in Abia State. At concentration of 1: 1 dilution and exposure time of 1 Ominutes the red close up exhibited a drastic reduction in the number of viable candida albicans while exposure for 20mins resulted- in total inhibition of the organism. At 5 to 20mins in : 1 and 1 :2 dilutions, Staphylococcus aureus was totally inhibited by Macleans, Red Close Up, Holdent and Dabur Herbal. Lactobacillus acidophilus at 10-20mins in 1:1 and I :2 dilutions with Red Close Up inhibited the organism. Pepsodent from my investigation was the least in the exhibition of antimicrobial activity against the isolated organisms. In conclusion, all the toothpaste exhibited antimicrobial activity on the isolated organisms at various concentration and times.
