Energy Expenditure And Nutrient Adequacy Of Institutionalized Female Adolescents

ABSTRACT

The study was carried out to determine the Energy Intake (E.!) and Energy Expenditure (E.E) of 60 female students in a boarding school in Umuahia. The students used for the study were aged 10-15 years. The study was carried out for 3 days, 2 week days and one weekend day. Energy expenditure was determined by factorial method and food intake by weighed inventory. Body composition was determined by anthropometry. The subjects mean daily energy intake was found to be 2342. 71 ± 313.58 kcal/d while mean energy expenditure was 2218± 352.2 kcal. The percentage contribution of carbohydrate, protein and fat to energy intake were 67.1%,11.98%., 20.9% respectively. The mean values for height, weight and arm circumference obtained were 148.28 ± 18.91 cm, 44.32 ± 7.57kg, 21.98 ± 1.2cm respectively. Values of Body composition parameters studied include Body fat 15.01 ± 3.63kg, Lean Body Mass (LBM) 29.75 ± 3.86kg and Body Mass Index (BMI) 19.79 ±2.l5kglm2 . The results showed that the subject met their energy requirement.
