ABSTRACT

The study was carried out to evaluate the effect of hydro-alcoholic extract of

Amaranthus hybridus leaves on antioxidant enzymes of thioacetamide

intoxicated rats. Thirty-six rats used for this study were randomly distributed

into six groups. The normal control received normal feed and water, the positive

control received the thioacetamide induced water and silymarin (conventional

drug), negative control received only thioacetamide, the test groups were

treated with 100mg/kg, 200mg/kg, 400mg/kg of Amaranthus hybridus leaves

extract respectively. The administration of the thioacetamide, drug and

Amaranthus hybridus leaves extract were orally at single doses per day for nine

weeks. Result showed that the test groups significantly (p < 0.05) increased the

levels of SOD, CAT, and GPx activities when compared to the negative control.

The results suggest that thioacetamide actually induced hepatotoxicity. While

Amaranthus hybridus leaves extract appreciably increased the levels of

antioxidants in hepatic tissues.
