ABSTRACT

The study on the effect of tillage depth, speed and effective ploughing width on draft and power requirement of a disc plough on sandy-clay soil in Abia state was carried out. Results shows that, the disc plough operation requires draft force range from 1.356 - 3.051KN/m to operate under tillage depth between 10 - 20cm while operating with speed varying from 6 - 8km/hr. Also the values ofthe draw-bar power recorded during the ploughing operation ranged from 2.90 - 5.42KW fo: the range of working width of (60 - 180cm), operational speed (6 - 8Km/hr) and ploughing depth varying from 10 to 20cm. Results of the optimization showed that the optimum draft-force and the draw-bar power are 1.9516 and 4.9487 respectively at optimum speed of 7.73709, working width of 119.064 and harrowing depth of 13.7061.
