Abstract

The study examine the effect of poor library facilities on the reading culture of secondary school student Model Umuahia North Local Government Area of Abia State: A case study of Gommun ty Model Secondary School Isieke, Ibeku. The descriptive survey research design was a op e le s u y. le primary source of data was through the use of questionnaire. A sample of 231 respondents comprising JS1, JS2, JS 3, SS 1 SS 2 and SS 3 Students of ommuni y econ aiy cioo students Isieke, Ibeku. However, the descriptive statistical tools such as mean and standard deviation were used for data analysis. From the findings derived from the study, it revealed that the effect of poor library facilities on the reading culture of secondaiy school students is much as the students agreed that the school library do not have computer sets, inteinet facilities, current and adequate reading resources. The causes of poor library facilities weie identified as inadequate funding of secondary schools, procurements of outdated infounation lesources, not giving students access to the school library at all time and non-provision of Computers and internet facilities in the school libraries. The study therefore, recommended that government should try their best in taking care of the libraries of our secondary schools, P.T.A should also do something concerning the state ofthe school libraries and NGOs should look into the secondary school libraries in order to improve the reading culture of our students
