Effect of management information system on the attainment of Organizational goals ( A Study of four selected banks in Abia state):- Oleghibe Ogechi V

ABSTRACT

This study examines the effect of management information system (MIS) on the attainment of

organizational goal, a study offour selected banks in Abia State. The researcher identified the

following specific objectives as a guide to carry out this study: to examine the extent of

electronic management system on the attainment of banking organizational goals, to determine

the extent of database management on the attainment of banking organizational goals, to

ascertain the extent ofhuman interaction on the overall attainment of banking organizational

goals. And to examine the impact of networking management on the overall attainment of

banking organizational goals in the four selected banks in Abia State, the sources ofinformation

was obtained by interview and use of structured questionnaire administered to staffs and

management ofthe four selected Banks in Abia State (Zenith bank, First bank, Access bank, and

UBA).The banks were selected based on some observed characteristics which among others

include total number ofbranches and number ofemployees, the study adopted a survey research

design to ease in the collection ofdata, There were altogether 1653 population ofthe staffs and

management of the above banks and out of this targeted population, 322 were sampled using

Taro Yamane’sformula at 5% and 1% error tolerance and 95% and 99%> level of confidence,

but 300 were returned while 22 were not returned. Analyzing the hypotheses with descriptive

statistic and analysis of variance. Result obtained revealed that electronic management system

has significant effect on the attainment of banking organizational goals (F-cal=2.752>Ftab=2.353, P=0.020 < a=0.05), also that data base management has significant effect on the

attainment ofbanking organizational goal (F-cal =3.0148> F-tab =2.353, P=0.003 <a =0.01)

and also, human interaction has significant effect on the attainment of banking organizational

goals. (F-cal =3.367> F-tab =2.353, P=0.000 < a=0.01). using analysis ofvariance, the result

revealed that networking management has no significant effect on the attainment of banking

organizational goals(F-cal = 1.590 < F-tab = 1.974, P=0.177>a= 0.05 ), while interbank

network has significant effect on the attainment ofbanking organizational goals (F-cal = 7.178>

F-tab =1.974, P=O.OOO<a= 0.05 ) andfinally that interbank transaction has significant effect on

the attainment of banking organizational goals (F-cal = 5.111> F-tab =1.974, P=0.001 <a

=0.05). the study recommended that such information system needs to be strategically managed

so as to bring about sound and profitable organization and thereby increase organizational

chance ofsurviving amidst daunting challenges and also banks should ensure adequate security

of available ICTfacilities for effective performance and prevention ofloss ofinformation, the

banks should also give their staffmore adequate training and proper orientation to ensure the

effective use ofinformation systems in the provision and circulation ofinformation for efficient

and effective decision-making
