Effect Of Liquid Petroleum Refinery Effluent On The Haematological Parameters Of African Catfish Clarias Gariepinus:- Okechukwu, Jessy C

ABSTRACT

Pollution of the aquatic environment occurs from oil refinery effluents which contain many different chemicals at different concentrations ■ including ammonia, sulphides, phenol and hydrocarbons. The extent of effect is dependent on the effluent composition, the outfall’s position and the state of the recipient environment. This work was undertaken to investigate the effect of refinery effluent on the haematological parameters such as haemoglobin, red blood cell, leucocyte count, eosinophils, basophils, neutrophils, lymphocytes and monocytes. And the biochemical parameters such as serum urea, serum glucose and pH. It was also to determine the sub lethal effects of industrial waste products. Exposure to industrial effluent elicited a significance of P<0.05 on the haematological parameters of Clarias gariepinus. The result show that as the concentration of the effluent increases from 0.00mol/1 to 0.500mol/1, there is a decrease in the white blood cells. It can be deduced that the presence of liouid petroleum effluent in the aquatic system could pose serious threat to the survival of Clarias gariepinus. Pollution of the water bodies with the industrial effluent should be prevented to avoid effects on fish and other aquatic organisms.
