Effect Of Instructional Materials On Students Academic Performance In Senior Secondary Schools In Nwangele Local Government Area, Imo State

ABSTRACT

This study was carried out to examine Effect of instructional materials for Home Economics instruction in senior secondary schools in Nwangele Local Government Area of Imo State. Two research questions and two null hypotheses were formulated to identify if there is a significant difference between effects of instructional. materials and students' performance in Home Economics and also if there is a significant difference between effects of models and specimens in teaching Home Economics. The research design adopted for this study was survey method while a well-structured questionnaire was used to elicit information from 20 teachers and 160 students who were sampled from schools selected. The study identified that there is availability of instructional materials for teaching of home economics except for the materials that could not be used due to the infrastructural and economic constraints of the study, instructional materials such as models and specimens also had a significant effect on the performance of Home Economics students, finally lack of awareness of where to obtain instructional materials, congested classrooms, lack of fund, irregular power supply and time were the identified problems facing_the effective use of instructional materials. Based on findings, the study recommended that school authorities should make' sure that there are available instructional materials for the teaching of Home Economics in the area, schools should be regularly provided with adequate learning materials, models and specimens should be equipped in the laboratory of various schools in the study area and adequate plans should be put in 'place to reduce the problems facing the schools on the use of instructional materials.
