Effect Of Glyphosphate Herbicides On Fingerlings Of Clarias Gariepinus In The Laboratory.

ABSTRACT

Clarias gariepirtus fingerlings were exposed to normal concentration of glyphosphate herbicides at 25ppm, 50ppm, 75ppm and. 100ppm ﾿  through a gravimetric toxicant auto delivery system during a static bioassay for 96-hours (4days). The median lethal concentration (96hrLC5o). Values with the lower and upper limits of toxicities were 25. l2ppm (1.26,1.12) respectively. The threshold value (soft level) was 24.54ppm. Statistical analysis of the data showed a significant difference between the 96-hrLC5o values for the experimental fish at P<O.05).During the exposure period the fish showed such signs as increased opercula movement, hyperventilation, secretiOn of mucus, quick jerky movement, darkening of the skin and no response to gentle prodding before death finally occurred. Theresult  suggest that, although Glyphosphate is a useful pesticides in agricultural and forestry because of its residual effect on non - target organism, it should be applied carefully using lowest possible doses to avoid unforeseen toxicological effects.
