ABSTRACT

The effects of different synthetic hormonal preparations on egg fertilization and hatching in Clarias was investigated. The fish were injected with three different synthetically hormones namely ovaprim, ovuline and carp pituitary extract (CPE). Treatment 1 was Ovaprim, treatment 2 was ovulin and treatment 3 was CPE which were all replicated thrice in a complete randomized design. The eggs were monitored until fertilization and hatching was completed. The result of the experiment was subjected to analysis of variance (ANOVA). All of them received equal treatment, treatment 2 had the highest fertilization of 79.4% and hatchability rate of 80.0% which were significantly different (pO.05) amongst the water parameters during the experiment periods. The result of the work shows that all the three hormones yield good performance rate, but ovulin is best preferable.
