ABSTARCT

The study determined the effect ofdividendpayment on theperformance ofselected commercial banks in Nigeria, while the specific objectives yvere to ascertain the effect of dividend payout ratio (DPR) on return on capital employed (ROCE) oflisted commercial banks in Nigeria, to determine the effect of dividend payout ratio (DPR) on the return on asset (ROA) of listed commercial banks in Nigeria and also to determine the effect ofdividendpayoutratio (DPR) on the return on equity (ROE) oflisted commercial banks in Nigeria. The research used regression to analyze the data. The results showed that the estimated coefficients of the regression parameter have both positive and negative signs and thus conform to our a-priori expectation. The research therefore recommends that banks willing to maximize shareholders wealth and firms value should endeavor to consistently increase their dividendpayout ratio as this sends a signal that the firm isfinancially healthy. Secondly, retained earnings should be set aside wheneverpossible as this couldpositively impact the performance bank.
