ABSTRACT

The digital era has come upon us. bringing with it vast and significant changes in the way information is handled, occasioned by information and communication technology (ICT) infusing into every aspect of library service, especially with the use of digital technologies in the creation, acquisition, organization. storage, dissemination and access to information in libraries and information centres. This has brought new narrative as well as new demands on library and information management education. The main purpose of the paper was education for library and infonnation science (LIS) in the era of digital technologies. It is an opinion paper and therefore, expository in nature. The paper discussed the basic conceptual ideas of education for LIS in the era of digital technologies. The paper critically reviewed the current status of LIS in the era of digital technologies and observed significant changes, as occasioned by the emergence of ICTs; it also exposed LIS in the digital age; discussed expected curriculum of LIS education in the digital era; explained the nature of resources for LIS education in the digital era; instructional methods for LIS in the digital era; and challenges of LIS education in the digital era The paper concluded by recommending a comprehensive curriculum change, ne» instructional methodology and training of US educators. on digital literacy with a view to producing from LIS schools all-round librarians and other information professionals, who are competent and equipped with broad range of new information skills to assist members of the client groups they serve, who will possess requisite skills and competences for the demands of the digital era.
