ABSTRACT

A cam and follower system is a mechanical linkage designed to transform a rotating motion to that of a linear reciprocating motion. Cams are well known for valving in internal combustion engines but are commonly utilized in industrial processes including stamping, food processing, and textile manufacturing but our study focuses on its laboratory application. Our project is therefore titled, the development of a cam and follower apparatus. The work will be carried out locally in the department of mechanical engineering with the following process: design, fabrication and testing to ascertain its performance. During the design process, proper selection based on design will be made for the electric motor, cam and follower materials and the shafts likewise the frame and casing materials. In addition, careful consideration will be ensured on the cam profiling. During the testing of the machine, evaluation will be based on the follower displacement, velocity and acceleration. Microsoft Excel was used to draw 'the corresponding graphs. All virtual drawings are represented in solid works.
