Determination Of Some Pollutants In Olokoro Stream In Umuahia South L.G.A. Abia State.

ABSTRACT

This study was carried out to determine some major pollutants in Olokoro stream. Physico - chemical parameters used in assessing water quality include Temperature, pH Turbidity, Dissolve Oxygen, Biochemical Oxygen Demand and heavy metals such as Pb, Cu, Zn, Fe, Cd, Ar, and Hg. The biological aspect of the study was based on phytoplankton and zooplankton abundance. Sample collection was done twice a month from the month of June to August 2009. A - one- way (Anova) showed that there is significant difference (P<O.05) across the locations and samples. For the plankton analysis, location three had the highest abundance of cyanophyta and diatoms in month July while location one had the least abundance in Month June. Zooplankton on the other hand were most abundant in location three in August but least abundant in month of June. There was however, an increase in plankton abundance as the month progressed, during the course of the study.
