Determinants Of Household Energy Demand For Cooking In Rural Areas: Orlu Local Government Area Of Imo State, Nigeria

ABSTRACT

This study examined the determinant of household energy demand for cooking in Orlu L.G.A. in Imo state. The specific objectives of the study was to determine the factors affecting the demand of household energy in the study area. The study adopted a simple random technique with a total of eighty (80) respondent used for the study. The data obtained were analysed using descriptive statistics and multiple regression technique. The result shows that the average age of the respondent is forty (40 years). The result also indicated that there are more females (64%) than male (36%) in the study area. Also majority of the respondent are married (84%). The regression result indicated that the factors influencing the demand of household energy are age, price of household energy. It also indicated that the household expenditure on energy is high (75.99%). It also shows that household cooking energy firewood (74%) and the factors influencing the choice of household size, price, household expenditure, income, level of education and frequency of cooking. The results also revealed that the constraints faced by respondents are 98%, 94%, 90%, 80%, 70%, 58% respectively for high cost of household energy, lack of financial resources, government policy, distance from the place of purchase to their residence and inadequate sale respectively. It was recommended also the government should make the purchasing of all these household energy for cooking easier for people to purchase and also the amount should be at affordable price.
