Design And Implementation Of Intranet Technology For The College Of Natural And Applied Sciences

ABSTRACT

An Intranet is a private network that is contained within an enterprise. It may consist of many interliriked local area networks. The main purpose of an mtranet is to share information and computing resources among employees in an organization. It can also be used to facilitate working in groups, maintaining a paperless office as well as the deployment of teleconferencing. An intranet uses TCP/IP, HTTP, and other hitemet protocols, and in general looks like a private version of the Internet. When part of an intranet is made accessible to other organizations or collaborators outside the organization, then it becomes an Extranet. A college base Intranet information management provides easy and immediate access to information by staff and students, promotes the efficient running of operations within the college. This project studies the existing system of information dissemination and management among staff and students of the College of Natural and Applied Science of Michael Okpara University of Agriculture Umudike, it introduced a computerized (automated), modernized and more effective and efficient system (INTRANET) for information dissemination. It describes a framework that distinguishes four different intranet implementation strategies. The taxonomy encompasses the architecture of the intranet (standard product or custom built) and the personnel implementing the intranet into the organization (in-house or outsourced). The framework consequently depicts four types of intranet implementation strategies: 1) Homemade intranet, 2) Tailor-made intranet by outside contractor, 3) Do-it-yourself intranet in-a-box, and 4) Intranet ina-box customized by outside contractor.
