ABSTRACT

In this work, a battery aided generator and its charging system was developed based on the principle of electromagnetic induction. Basically, the battery aided generator consist of a 3HP DC motor which is powered by two 12V batteries connected in series. The electric motor is connected to a 3KVA alternator with the aid of a coupling. In turn, the alternator generates alternating current (AC) which is used to power electric gadgets. In this same vein, some of the current from the alternator finds its way back to the battery for recharging through the charging system which was constructed. This charging system converts the AC to DC and steps the 220V voltage down to 24V suitable for charging the batteries. The generator doesn't require any conventional fossil fuel for its operation. It is designed to solve the problem of power failure and incessant outage from the grid electricity supply. It also aim at curbing the high cost of fossil fuel and to reduce the effect of air pollution caused by gas emission. From the performance evaluation conducted on the machine, a design efficiency of 96.12% was obtained when the battery aided generator was fully loaded. The 3.88% loss is attributed to the heat loss generated by the machine when it is loaded. The performance evaluation test was carried out twice to ensure accuracy of result.
